Spotlight on Our Volunteers
Congratulations to our award recipients. On behalf of the LTF team and family thank you for your hard work and dedication on behalf of our participants.
Marissa Schultz – Lion of the Year
In June of 2010, Marissa Schultz was chosen as the Lion of The Year award recipient. Marissa is a
junior forward on the Columbia Women’s Soccer team. She is originally from Plymouth, Minnesota and attended Wayzata high school. Last soccer season Marissa started 10 games for the Lions and played in all 17 contests.
Marissa served as a classroom volunteer, a coach at LTF soccer clinics and participated in the opening and closing ceremonies during the LTF pilot year. Marissa was a tremendous asset to the LTF team and family. Next LTF season, beginning in the fall of 2010, Marissa will take on an additional role and will write about her experiences as an LTF volunteer, her first article can be found on our home page.
Katie Jones – Volunteer of the Year
Katie Jones is an invaluable part of the LTF team and family. Katie has been selected as this year’s co-recipient of the Volunteer Award for her endless dedication as an LTF volunteer and constant assistance with managing logistics from the Columbia University side. Since the inception of the program Katie has not only been a constant presence during LTF volunteer events but also has dedicated her time helping the LTF Staff arrange and confirm Columbia University facilities and coordinate schedules with the CU athletes. From October, 2009 through January, 2010, Katie took on the sole responsibility of escorting 42 CU athletes to get their fingerprints thereby allowing them to enter the WHEELS classroom and work with the students.
Katie is originally from Macon, Georgia but for the past five years she has resided in New York City and served as the Director of Sports Camps at Columbia. She was also part of a team responsible for a $25,000 NCAA grant to support the grassroots marketing for Columbia University’s Women’s Basketball team.
Robby Sheehan – Volunteer of the Year
Robby Sheehan, a native New Yorker, is no stranger to volunteering and Level The Field is honored to have him serve as a valued member of the Advisory Board and a committed LTF Volunteer. In recognition of his continued support, valued strategic input, and invaluable hands on work with the WHEELS students, Robby has been selected as this year’s co-recipient of the Volunteer of the Year Award. Since inception Robby has played an instrumental role in shaping the direction of LTF as an organization by participating during key meetings and networking on behalf of LTF. Additionally, Robby has dedicated numerous Saturdays volunteering during the sports clinics and games. Robby truly enjoys interacting with the WHEELS students and as a result has quickly become one of their favorite volunteers.
For the past 2 years, Robby has worked as a paralegal at the Brooklyn Legal Services Corp where he assisted victims of predatory lending and homeowners facing foreclosure. This fall, Robby will attend law school at Fordham University.
Michael Hoverman – Kids Choice Award
Michael Hoverman was one of the first volunteers that the WHEELS students met and quickly became one of their favorites. Therefore, it came as no surprise when the WHEELS students selected Michael to be this year’s recipient of the Kids Choice Award. Since the beginning of the program last fall, Michael has devoted countless Fridays and Saturdays to the program, frequently traveling to Washington Heights to escort students to and from Columbia. Michael was a constant presence during sports clinics and games exuding enthusiasm and patience while working with the WHEELS students. His dedication to the WHEELS students and the program has also made him a valuable member of the Advisory Board where he consistently seeks ways to improve the program.
Michael is currently employed by Macquarie Capital where he plays an integral part of the Investor Relations Team. Michael also serves as a student mentor to underprivileged high school students in the Macquarie Group Foundation’s annual internship program.
Level The Field Spring for Change Ambassador
This year’s Spring for Change fundraiser would not be possible without our dedicated Event Committee and this year’s Event Ambassador, Andriana Cruz. As a native New Yorker, Andriana immediately became passionate about Level The Field and its works with the WHEELS students. Andriana did a tremendous job promoting LTF and its program, single handily selling 18 tickets to this year’s event. On behalf of LTF, its Staff, and the WHEELS students thank you to Andriana for all her hard work, continued support and dedication to the program.
Andriana is currently a Product Manager in the Electronic Brokerage division of BGC and resides in New York City.
