FAQ's
Who are the Level The Field volunteers?
Volunteers are essential to the success of the program. Level The Field volunteers are energetic, committed, and caring individuals looking to make a difference in the lives of the inner city youth taking part in the LTF program. In conjunction with the Columbia University athletes, Level The Field volunteers serve as role models and mentors for these students.

What is the role of a Level The Field volunteer?
The Level The Field model is comprised of three components: intercollegiate competitions, sports clinics and classroom instruction. Level The Field volunteers play an active role during intercollegiate contests and sports clinics. Volunteers assist LTF staff by escorting students via the New York City subway system from WHEELS to Columbia University and back. During this time, volunteers have the opportunity to get to know and develop lasting bonds with the students. In addition to escorting the students to and from Columbia University, volunteers take on a vital mentorship role during intercollegiate contests and sports clinics.
Intercollegiate Contests:
During the intercollegiate contests component, volunteers play an active role by interacting with the students throughout the course of the games to ensure that the students not only understand the rules of the game but also observe the communication, sportsmanship, teamwork, and leadership skills exhibited by the athletes.
Sports Clinics:
During the sports clinic component, volunteers are encouraged to participate alongside the Columbia University athletes in the actual demonstrations, including baseball, basketball, and soccer drills.
What is the typical time commitment for Level The Field volunteer?
Given the dynamic nature of this program, Level The Field accepts full and part-time volunteers. A full-time volunteer will devote approximately 20-25 hours over the span of 6 months. A part-time volunteer can devote as much time as his/her schedule permits. The Level The Field season begins in late October and runs through early May. On average Level The Field holds a combination of two to three intercollegiate contests and sports clinics each month. Level The Field events take place primarily on Friday nights and Saturdays with each event lasting approximately three hours.
What other volunteer opportunities are available at Level The Field?
Because Level The Field is an entirely volunteer driven organization, there are additional volunteer opportunities that do not involve direct participation during the intercollegiate contests and sports clinics components. Level The Field volunteers can also play a crucial role during the fundraising process and assist with the operations of the program. Volunteers may join the fundraising committee, seek corporate matching from their companies, and donate specific skill sets to assist with daily operations of Level The Field.
