Our MissionOur mission is to empower inner-city youth by providing a unique opportunity to work with high achieving collegiate student-athletes both inside and outside of the classroom. Letter from the CEOErica WodaGreetings LTF Friends and Family, I hope everyone had a wonderful summer. While the summer is typically LTF’s “off-season”, you athletes out there know that there is no such thing. I kicked off my summer with a trip to Bolivia sponsored by the United States Department of State and the US Embassy in Bolivia. I was invited to Bolivia to share the LTF model with coaches, athletic directors, physical education teachers and not-for-profit program directors in La Paz, El Alto and Santa Cruz. Despite the obvious language barrier, we all agreed that participation in sports helps to prepare children for success in the classroom and beyond. It was thrilling to see the positive impact sports can have on children across different cultures. It was clear that sports are helping to level the field not just where we live, but around the world. This year, we are gearing up to launch our third season. In September, we will be begin working with over 300 sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students from the Washington Heights neighborhood in New York City. They will work both inside and outside the classroom with high-achieving Columbia student-athletes from the Men’s and Women’s soccer teams, Men’s and Women’s basketball teams, Women’s track team, and baseball and football teams. September will also mark the much anticipated launch of our Boston chapter. In March of last year we finalized a partnership between Tufts University Athletics and the East Somerville Community School. On Friday, September 23rd we will officially launch LTF Boston with opening ceremonies set to take place at our newest partner school in East Somerville, Massachusetts. Without the support of our friends, colleagues and family members, what once started as a grassroots organization serving 87 children would not be afforded the opportunity to expand our reach to two cities serving over 350 students. Volunteer Information 2011-2012Julia Nosov Dear LTF Friends and Family, It is with great pleasure that I begin to plan the launch of this year’s volunteer program in New York City. Last year, over 30 dedicated individuals joined us to accompany our sixth and seventh graders to Columbia University for sports clinics and games. It is because of these individuals that our students were able to confidently participate during clinics and better understand the rules of the game. Our volunteers also gained from the experience, constantly smiling and in some cases even honing their dance skills while practicing the Sponge Bob and the Dougie. This year, I look forward to working with our devoted volunteer base and hope to see many new faces as we expand the scope of our program to include sixth, seventh and eighth grade students. Jets Events in May 2010 At the end of last season, 200 LTF participants were given the opportunity to apply to go on field trips to the Atlantic Health Jets Training Facility and the New Meadowlands Stadium. In May 50 kids were selected to attend these special field trips. The purpose of these trips was to teach the kids how to fill out applications and meet deadlines in preparation for filling out applications for jobs and eventually college. Meet Lindsay Danielson! Level The Field would like to congratulate Lindsay Danielson on being named program director of the New York City branch. Danielson played an integral role in creating, developing and refining the LTF program as our intern for the past 3 years. A recent graduate of Columbia University, Danielson will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the program in New York City. While at Columbia, Danielson was a member of the Columbia University Women's Soccer Team and an active coordinator and member of the Level The Field Team. She is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in English education from Teachers College at Columbia University. Level The Field is excited to continue to work with Lindsay in this new capacity as she will undoubtedly continue to bring enthusiasm and a strong desire for social change as LTF enters its third year of programming.
